Michael Achenbaum, CEO, Gansevoort Hotel Group
Michael Achenbaum is the co-owner and partner of Gansevoort Hotel Group (GHG), a luxury lifestyle brand and subsidiary of WSA Management, Ltd. With master’s degrees in both law and business from New York University, Achenbaum lends business acumen, innovative thinking and an energetic vibrancy to the flourishing Gansevoort Hotel Group brand.
In 2004, Achenbaum led GHG in the revitalization of the once gritty Meatpacking District, opening the first luxury hotel in the neighborhood. Since then, Achenbaum has built a reputation as a pioneer in the industry, expanding his portfolio to emerging neighborhoods in need of new energy and imagination. Gansevoort has served a catalyst for growth in Manhattan’s Meatpacking and NoMad Districts as well as in the Caribbean, where Achenbaum brought luxury development to untapped markets in Grace Bay with Gansevoort Turks & Caicos, and Puerto Plata with Gansevoort Dominican Republic.
Most recently, Achenbaum solidified a partnership with Douglaston Development, SUSD and Hondo Enterprises to develop The Curtain Hotel and Private Members Club, a full-service urban resort that will set a new standard of hospitality in yet another neighborhood, the Shoreditch district of East London.
Achenbaum and his father have co-developed over $1 billion in property since 1999. He’s utilized his law and business backgrounds by managing all new development opportunities, maintaining relationships with lenders and conducting financial analysis of prospective deals. This diverse experience has given him the tools and ambition necessary to be fully involved in every detail of the brand, even handpicking and personally negotiating leases for all high-end retail and restaurant partners to ensure Gansevoort maintains a level of excellence in service and a distinct style that is unparalleled elsewhere in the hospitality industry.
Raised on Long Island, Achenbaum earned his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Michigan before studying at New York University. Prior to his real estate ventures, Achenbaum held positions at Bear Stearns and Nomura Securities where he originated commercial mortgage loans for securitization.
